Success is what happens every single day (aka "The Five Things")
Jun 14, 2016A few years ago, our daughter Ivey (second oldest, if you're keep score!) was toddling around the house. She was about 4- and was into everything.
She'd make a bed. "Are you the little house-keeper, now?" I'd ask. She'd nod that she was...
Then she'd grab a rake and shuffle through the yard. "So you're the yardman, now?" Again, she confirmed Yes with a simple smile and a nod...
She'd help in the kitchen. "Now, you're the little chef?!" Again... of course she was...
This went on for about a week. Then, one day I was working under the sink, trying to fix a leaky drain pipe. She walked in, looked like she was ready to help, so I asked...
"Are you the little plumber?"
I was expecting the customary nod, but she stood her ground on this one. She gave me a tender, "No... I can't be everything..."
And there it was. From the mouth of babes...
The reality of tradeoffs
You can't be everything- or do everything- anymore than a 4 year old. I can't either. When people used to ask us how we get it all done, I'd say something like, "I'm not sure..." Or, "You just do..."
Now, I answer more honestly: "We work really hard. We get up really early to do some of the most important things like exercise, pray, hear from God... We get up while most people are asleep... as in, we do a few hours of things before our kids get up for school!"
Then, I tell them, as well: "We don't do everything. We only do some things."
We've made some tradeoffs:
- We don't watch network TV consistently, but we do go on a date night every single week.
- We don't make car payments, but we do go on a nice vacation each year.
- We don't do xBox, PlayStation, or other game consoles, but our kids do have devices they can use to read, write, or create with...
So, we make time for what we want to do but NOT doing things that we feel aren't as important to those goals.
(By the way, no disrespect if your goals and dreams are different. That's what's so great about this concept- we can all pick and choose what we want to do with our time and money, in the same way that we can all pick and choose the flavor of ice cream we want. No dishonor if you like Pralines and we like Chocolate Chip Cookie-Dough- we all get decide on our own, right!?)
The other secret
Ok. So secret #1 to doing it all is to NOT do it all. Do what's most important to you.
Secret #2 is this: find out what specific actions move that dream forward- and do them repeatedly. That's right, do them over and over and over...
The easiest way I know to do that is to find a few things that move you forward and then consistently do them. Every day. Yes. Every. Single. Day.
- Cristy nurtures her love of worship and prayer every day.
- I exercise every day.
- Cristy connects with her kids every day.
- I write or create... every day.
We often mistakenly think that in order to achieve huge results we have to do huge things. Not true. In order to do huge things, you only need to do small things over and over and over… A bunch of small things done consistently creates an exponential impact.
If you want to grow your business, find a few things and do them.
If you want to get in shape, identify the action steps and do them (and no cheat days- why give up ground on what you've worked so hard to attain!).
If you want a better relationship, take a few simple steps every day...
Now, in this video, we'll share with you a few things we do with our business. But, this concept is so amazing that it applies to every area of your life...
For biz builders, quick tip
There are really only three things that build your business- three:
* enrolling new members
* moving existing members (even if they're new!) to Essential Rewards (as repeat customers)
* multiplying leaders
Everything you do related to your business needs to bolster- or achieve- one of those three. If you continually hit that, over and over, you'll see growth :-)
